Difference Between Drag Chain Cable and UL2464 H05VV-F Cable

Flexible drag chain cable is a flexible cable that can be used in regular industrial environments for moving back and forth in bending occasions, while ordinary multicore cable refers to copper-core PVC insulated PVC sheathed flexible wire, belonging to UL2464 cable or H05VV-F cable. The difference between these two kinds of cable lies in how they are used and selected during the process.

Flexible difference

First, from the point of view of our installation and use:

  • Flexible drag chain cable is mainly suitable for continuous reciprocating movement, especially in conventional industrial environments under wet or dry conditions where high-frequency mobile installations are required. These include numerical control airport equipment, automation equipment, modern machinery components in drag chains, logistics systems, control systems, and mechanical automation systems, such as robotic arms, construction machinery, heavy machine shops, automobile manufacturing, lifting and transport equipment, automated warehouses, docks, and fire engines.
  • Ordinary multicore cable is used for fixed installations or occasional movement without strong stress relief, such as electrical, instrumentation, and electronic equipment in indoor environments. It is often used for power lines, control lines, and signal transmission lines, specifically for burglar alarm systems, building intercom systems, etc.

Drag chain cable

Second, from the material:

The difference between the two cables in use mainly comes from the manufacturing process.

  • UL2464 H05VV-F cable consists of two or more single-core wires with a layer of sheath. The number of core wires is not fixed and is surrounded by a PVC sheath, with no special arrangement requirements between the core wires.
  • Flexible Drag Chain Cable, however, has strict requirements on the core structure. The differences are as follows:
    1. Conductor:
      • The conductor of drag chain cable adopts 0.1mm wires, while UL2464 H05VV-F adopts 0.2mm wires, making drag chain cable finer and softer.
    2. Insulation:
      • Drag chain wire is made of special PVC sheathing, which is soft, wear-resistant, and torsion-resistant.
      • Ordinary multicore wire uses standard PVC insulation.
    3. Filling:
      • Drag chain cables can be filled with Kevlar fiber or other tensile materials, ensuring cable roundness and maximizing performance in specific environments.
      • Ordinary multicore cables use ordinary fillers to ensure roundness without specific filler materials for unique applications.
    4. Sheath:
      • Drag chain cables use special modified elastomer butyl as the sheath material, which is soft, abrasion-resistant, oil-resistant, and tear-resistant.
      • H05VV-F UL2464 cables, on the other hand, use ordinary PVC for their sheaths, offering less durability.

General Comparison:

  • Drag chain cables are designed for harsh mobile environments and offer superior properties like abrasion resistance, tear resistance, bending resistance, oil resistance, etc.
  • H05VV-F UL2464 cables are primarily for fixed installations.
  • Additionally, drag chain cables have different temperature resistance, bending radius, and a longer service life, making them better suited for dynamic conditions.
