Is Trailer Wiring AC or DC?

Introduction

When connecting our vehicle truck to the trailer’s lighting system, we use trailer cables such as 4-core or 7-core cables. With so many cores, is this cable AC or DC?

The answer is DC. For trailer wiring, the cables must be DC.

Why Is DC Used for Trailer Power?

1.The power for the trailer comes from the towing vehicle or truck.

The power for the vehicle or truck typically comes from the vehicle’s battery, and the electricity in the battery is DC.

2. Using AC increases conversion and costs

Considering that a vehicle’s electrical energy is stored in the battery, converting AC current to DC would inevitably increase costs.

3. DC is more suitable for electronic devices on trailers

Electronic devices are powered by DC. Therefore, to facilitate power supply for electronic devices, we choose DC for trailer wiring.

4. DC systems are safer and more stable

Modern vehicle wiring environments are becoming increasingly complex.
AC can make the system more complex and cause electronic signal interference.
DC, however, improves this significantly.

Common Cable Types in Trailer DC Circuits

  • Vehicle trailer wiring: European standard FLRY, American standard TXL

  • Vehicle battery connection cables: European standard FLY, American standard SGX. Some also opt for silicone cables FL2G

  • Electric vehicle power cables: EVRP and FHLR2GCB2G

  • Multi-core trailer connection cables: PUR 7×1.5mm2, PVC 7x 1.5mm2
