Difference between 2 awg & 2/0 awg cable
1. What is 2/0 awg & 2 awg cable
AWG Definition
As we all know, the American Wire Gauge, abbreviated as AWG, is used as the standard for cables in the United States, which is different from the metric system. The larger the AWG value, the smaller the cable size, the smaller the cable size, the larger the resistance, and the smaller the current that can be carried.
2. The difference between 2 awg & 2/0 awg cable
The difference between 2awg and 2/0 awg in AWG cable gauge is often confused by my customers. First of all, it is important to understand that 2awg and 2/0 awg are not the same cable. The difference in area between these two cables is almost double. I have created the following table for your reference:
AWG | Cross section
mm2 |
Diameter
mm |
Conductor
Resistance Ohm/km |
Current Flow
amps |
2 | 33.6 | 6.54 | 0.57 | 100-120A |
2/0 | 67.5 | 9.27 | 0.29 | 200A |
3. Why do we need to know the difference between 2awg and 2/0 awg cables?
- Safety: Different sizes of cables can carry different currents. If you use a 2awg cable as a 2/0 awg cable, it will end up carrying too much current, causing the cable to heat up. And if you have a cable jacket that is not flame retardant, it is likely to cause a fire.
- Economy: The price difference between 2awg and 2/0 awg cables is huge, and even more so when you choose pure copper cables. Typically 2awg cable will cost $4-$4.50/meter while 2/0 awg cable will cost $8.50-$9/meter. For example, when your engineer tells you that you only need 2awg, but you end up buying 2/0, it may not affect your usage, but it means that you spent 2 times the amount of money.
4. How do we go about choosing the right cable?
A. Evaluate the needs and applications
First of all, the power voltage or current of the equipment, the working environment. It is important to note that as the distance increases, the electrical performance of the cable will be reduced.
B. Consider the future upgrade needs
If you are going to have an upgrade plan in the future, then you can consider using large size cables and using better sheathed cables.
C. Consult a professional
Of course, if your hands are not strong, then I still recommend that you consult some electrical engineers or related professionals. KMCABLE has a professional team of electrical engineers with more than 12 years of experience in the industry. If you have the need, you can also come to consult us.
D. Choose certified cables
Please try to choose UL CE RoHS certified cables under the premise of economy. These cables may be more expensive, but at least the quality is guaranteed. Because non-professionals, it is really difficult to identify the difference between the cable sheath and material.

5. Conclusion
In conclusion, we need to understand that 2/0 and 2 awg are two kinds of size cables. If you use 2 awg instead of 2/0 cables, it is going to cause safety risks. If you have difficulties in choosing, please go and consult an electrical engineer or an expert. Of course, the KMCABLE team will be happy to help you with your cable selection. Please do not hesitate to contact us.
