1. What are halogens?

The halogens are the six elements in group VII of the periodic table, namely F, Cl, Br, I,  At and Ts. Among them, F and Cl are commonly found in cables, and the gases released from the combustion of these two elements are highly toxic to human beings.

2. What is low smoke halogen-free cable (LSZH)?

Low smoke halogen-free cables, according to the name, is a kind of cable that does not produce dense smoke after burning and has no halogen. These cables are environmentally friendly, safe, and durable.
The relevant standards are IEC 60754 and EN50525.
Common types of low smoke halogen free cables are: H07Z1-K, H05Z1Z1-K, RZ1-K or some TPU TPE or silicone rubber cables.

3. Where are halogen-free cables usually used?

Halogen free cables are often used in fire conditions where low smoke and halogen free environments are required. They are often used for cabling in enclosed spaces such as densely populated office buildings, hospitals, shopping malls, and archives. However, they are NOT suitable for outdoor environments or some super-high temperature environments.

4. How to choose low smoke and halogen free cables?

The easiest way is to light the cable directly. If the gas emitted from the cable is a fine black smoke, then the cable is likely to contain halogens. Of course, you can also check whether the cable has the relevant RoHS certification, or low-smoke halogen-free test report to distinguish.

It is difficult to buy a suitable low-smoke halogen-free cable. Because of the conventional cable factory, the most commonly used cable sheathing material is generally PVC material (containing halogen), this kind of material is economic and electrical properties Mechanical properties of excellent performance. If your volume is small, cable factories are not going to go out of their way to specifically buy low-smoke halogen-free raw materials to produce LSZH cables. They will need to stop the machine and replace it with a new material, which is not a low cost.
