6mm Cable – 10 AWG Equivalent, Factory Direct
6mm² cable is the metric equivalent of 10 AWG, and it is the most common mid-range conductor size for solar, battery, EV charging and welding circuits. This page gives you the load capacity, diameter and amp rating for real KMCABLE constructions, plus factory-direct pricing across all four applications. Every number comes from certified product datasheets, not estimates.

Quick Spec Reference
This table covers the three sub-questions buyers ask most: how much current a 6mm² conductor carries, how thick it is, and how it compares across constructions. Each column pulls from a different certified 6mm² product line, since solar, battery and EV cables use different stranding and insulation.
| Application | Conductor construction | Conductor OD | Cable OD | Resistance @20°C | Current carrying capacity |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Solar / PV (H1Z2Z2-K, 62930 IEC131) | 84/0.3 mm | 2.9 mm | 7.2 mm | 3.39 Ω/km | 70 A at 60°C |
| Battery / rubber-sheathed | 190/0.20 mm | 2.76 mm | 5.10 mm | 3.14 Ω/km | To be confirmed by our engineers based on your installation conditions (12h reply) |
| EV charging (5-core, H07BZ5-F) | 6.0 mm² per phase core (5×6.0mm²+2×0.5mm²) | — | 16.5 ± 0.5 mm (whole cable) | — | Rated 32 A per phase, 22 kW three-phase |

AWG note: 6mm² = 10 AWG. For reference on the same load table, 4.0 mm² carries 55 A at 60°C and 10 mm² carries 98 A at 60°C — 6mm² sits between the two at 70 A at 60°C for the solar-grade construction in that size range.
Diameter varies by application because insulation thickness and stranding differ: the solar cable's 84/0.3 mm stranding gives a fatter 7.2 mm overall diameter for outdoor UV/weather resistance, while the battery cable's finer 190/0.20 mm stranding stays flexible at a slimmer 5.10 mm outer diameter for tight engine-bay or enclosure routing.

Whole-cable OD is 7.2 mm for the 6mm² solar / PV single core, 5.10 mm for the rubber-sheathed battery version, and 16.5 ± 0.5 mm for the 5-core EV charging cable including its outer sheath.
6mm² Solar / PV Cable
6mm² solar cable is sized for string-level DC wiring between panels, combiner boxes and inverters, where UV exposure and outdoor temperature swings make insulation grade as important as conductor size. That current rating gives most residential and small commercial strings comfortable headroom above typical short-circuit currents.
In our H1Z2Z2-K construction, the 6.0 mm² conductor uses 84/0.3 mm fine stranding for flexibility during installation, wrapped to a 7.2 mm cable outer diameter, and rated for 70 A at 60°C with a maximum conductor resistance of 3.39 Ω/km at 20°C. The "at 60°C" condition matters because ampacity is not a fixed number — it's a rating tied to a reference ambient temperature.
The 70 A figure assumes the cable is operating in a 60°C environment, which is the standard reference point for rooftop solar runs baking in direct sun; run the same conductor somewhere cooler and it can safely carry more, run it somewhere hotter (or bundled tightly with other cables) and the safe current drops. That's why any ampacity claim without a stated temperature is incomplete.
Key specs
- Construction: 84/0.3 mm stranded copper, 2.9 mm conductor OD, 7.2 mm cable OD.
- Certification: TÜV 2 PfG 1169 (H1Z2Z2-K), IEC 62930 (62930 IEC131).
SKUs in this section
- H1Z2Z2-K solar cable and 62930 IEC131 PV cable — the two certified 6.0 mm² lines, built to double-insulated, halogen-free standards for rooftop and ground-mount arrays.
- The full solar cable range covers 1.5 mm² through 120 mm².
6mm² cable uses an 84/0.3 mm stranded copper conductor — 84 strands of 0.3 mm, 2.9 mm conductor OD inside a 7.2 mm cable OD — rated 70 A at 60 °C with 3.39 Ω/km conductor resistance at 20 °C.

6mm² Battery & Inverter Cable
For battery banks, inverter connections and DC power distribution inside cabinets, 6mm² battery cable trades the solar cable's weather resistance for tighter bend radius and easier routing in confined enclosures. This makes it a practical fit for battery-to-inverter jumpers, DC bus bars and short high-current runs where cabinet space is limited.
Our rubber-sheathed construction uses 190/0.20 mm conductor stranding (2.76 mm conductor diameter) under 0.80 mm insulation, giving a compact 5.10 mm cable outer diameter and 3.14 Ω/km resistance at 20°C — noticeably slimmer than the solar-grade 6mm² build because the stranding and jacket are optimized for flexing rather than outdoor UV survival.
The choice between the two 6mm² families comes down to where the cable lives: pick the solar-grade construction when the run is outdoors and exposed to UV and weather, and pick the battery-grade construction when the run is inside an enclosure, engine bay or cabinet where flexibility and a tighter bend radius matter more than outdoor durability — running the wrong one either wastes money on UV resistance you don't need indoors, or leaves an outdoor run under-protected.
Key specs
- Construction: 190/0.20 mm stranded copper, 2.76 mm conductor OD, 0.80 mm insulation.
- Rating: 5.10 mm cable OD, 3.14 Ω/km at 20°C; ampacity quoted for your installation conditions.
SKUs in this section

- twin-core battery cable — positive and negative runs in one jacket.
- The wider battery cable category covers cross-sections beyond 6mm².
6mm² EV Charging Cable
In EV charging, 6mm² almost always shows up as one core within a multi-core charging cable rather than a single conductor — our 22 kW three-phase Type 2 charging cable uses a 5×6.0mm²+2×0.5mm² construction, with three 6.0 mm² phase cores (brown, black, grey), a 6.0 mm² neutral (blue) and a 6.0 mm² protective earth (yellow/green), plus two 0.5 mm² signal cores for proximity and control pilot communication.
This H07BZ5-F cable is rated 450/750V, carries 32 A per phase for 22 kW three-phase charging, and operates from −30°C to +90°C with a 16.5 ± 0.5 mm overall diameter.
It is certified to IEC 62196-1:2022 and IEC 62196-3:2022 for the connector interface, built to EN 50620 / IEC 62893 cable standards, flame-retardant to IEC 60332-1-2, and RoHS/REACH compliant, with TÜV, CE, UKCA and CB approvals.

6mm² Welding & Industrial Cable
Welding circuits also use 6mm²-class conductors, and for welding duty our engineers confirm the exact current rating and insulation grade against your machine's duty cycle within 12 hours of your inquiry.
Ampacity and insulation thickness depend heavily on duty cycle, ambient temperature and cable length — figures we don't publish as generic numbers because a wrong ampacity claim on a welding circuit is a safety issue, not just a spec mismatch.
The choice between the two lines comes down to the working environment: 0361TQ follows standard welding-cable duty-cycle ratings and suits general fabrication and workshop use, while EPDM insulation holds up better under sustained high-temperature exposure — near furnaces, foundries or heavy industrial duty cycles where the cable jacket itself is under continuous thermal stress rather than intermittent welding heat.
Key specs
- Duty cycle: confirmed against your machine's nameplate output and duty-cycle percentage.
- Sheath options: 0361TQ for standard workshop duty, EPDM for sustained high temperature.
SKUs in this section
- 0361TQ welding cable — standard duty-cycle applications.
- EPDM welding cable — higher heat-resistance environments.
- Full gauge and construction range: welding cable.
